A national HIV/AIDS plan was prepared, calling for an expanded multisectoral response to the epidemic. The Prime Minister and the HIV/AIDS Minister of Côte d’Ivoire also promoted decentralized action on AIDS and encouraged increased attention and funding for actions at the local level. One of first to be established, AMICAALL Côte d’Ivoire has focused on capacity strengthening of local authorities in participatory planning, incorporating the different needs of women and men, and sharing information and experiences. Despite challenges emanating from the civil crisis in the country and economic constraints, AMICAALL Côte d’Ivoire and partners have managed to facilitate the establishment of 85 Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) centers, creation of 50 Municipal Information Cells on HIV/AIDS and initiated a process of integrating HIV/AIDS and gender into two municipal development plans. Abidjan has also been selected by UNDP as the location of a Thematic Pole on Information Communication Technology, to be led by AMICAALL. |
| Côte d'Ivoire National Chapter of The Alliance launched in November 1999 |
The National Chapter of the Alliance was launched in November 1999 and an AMICAALL plan of action developed. Sensitisation activities were undertaken but political instability hindered efforts. During 2006,the AMICAALL programme was, hosted by the Association of Mayors in Côte d’Ivoire and activities extended to 25 municipalities. AMICAALL Côte d’Ivoire is also working with an established national municipal training centre, by contributing to its training sessions, and focusing on enhancing municipal responses to the epidemic. The AMICAALL Toolkit was used to facilitate the training sessions.
