Côte d'Ivoire

Côte d'Ivoire is one of the countries worst hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in West Africa. One in 7 adults and teenagers age 15 to 49 are living with HIV, and 450,000 children have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. The epidemic has become the leading cause of death among adults, and its impact threatens the country's economic, social and human development.

A new national HIV/AIDS plan for the period 2002-2004 has been prepared, calling for an expanded multisectoral response to the epidemic. The Prime Minister and the HIV/AIDS Minister of Côte d'Ivoire are promoting decentralized action on AIDS and encouraging increased attention and funding for actions at the local level.

Côte d'Ivoire National Chapter of the Alliance launched in November 1999

The National Chapter of the Alliance was launched in November 1999 and an AMICAALL plan of action developed. Sensitisation activities were undertaken but political instability hindered efforts. Programme activities have recently been relaunched. During 2006, a new national AMICAALL Coordinator was named, hosted by the Association of Mayors in Côte d’Ivoire and activities have been extended to 25 municipalities. AMICAALL Côte d’Ivoire is also working with a recently established national municipal training centre, by contributing to its training sessions, and focusing on enhancing municipal responses to the epidemic. The AMICAALL Toolkit is being used to facilitate the training sessions.

Support for programme activities has come from many partners, such as UNDP, UNAIDS and the World Bank. AMICAALL Côte d’Ivoire is continuing efforts at resource mobilisation and partnership development.
