Kenya
Kenya has a population of 34.3 million people, 1.3 million of whom are infected with the HIV virus. Approximately 1.4 million people have died due to AIDS. The Central Bureau of Statistics estimates that without AIDS, life expectancy at birth would currently be about 65 years. However, because of the large number of AIDS deaths, current life expectancy is approximately 51 according to UNAIDS.
In 1999 the Government of Kenya declared HIV a national disaster. With high-level support from the President of Kenya a National AIDS Control Office was created by Presidential decree, and HIV prevention programmes have been established in all ministries, as well as in the private sector. The National AIDS Control Council has developed the Kenya National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan 2005–2010, the predominant theme of which is social change to reduce HIV/AIDS and poverty. However, challenges remain, and there is more to do.

Kenya Chapter of the Alliance was launched in June 2004
In collaboration with the Association of Local Government Authorities of Kenya (ALGAK), the Kenya Chapter of the Alliance was officially launched in June 2004. The ALGAK Declaration on HIV/AIDS was issued, calling for expanded action at the local level on HIV.
This launch was preceded by a Forum on HIV/AIDS policy and advocacy with local authorities, held in May 2003. Then a series of provincial sensitisation workshops with local authorities were held in 2003/2004 to enhance local ownership and commitment of Kenyan mayors and municipal leaders from the 175 local authorities.
In 2005, AMICAALL Kenya held its third sensitisation and planning workshop with local government authorities. The workshop brought together representatives of Rift Valley Province local governments, the Kenya National AIDS Council (NAC), UNDP and local AMICAALL focal points. The AMICAALL Kenya programme also provided support to the local government authority in Kisumu to develop a municipal HIV response programme in 2006, and to Nairobi City Council to launch its HIV workplace programme in 2007. Through activities such as these, AMICAALL Kenya is supporting local government authorities to identify priority actions that can be undertaken at the ward and local government levels to expand much needed services and support to vulnerable households and communities that complement national efforts.
The AMICAALL Kenya Programme works in close collaboration with the Kenya National AIDS Council (NAC), and other partners in the country, to promote a coordinated, multi-sectoral response to HIV at the local level.
