The Southern Africa region continues to be severely affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Namibia is one of the most affected countries in the world, with an estimated 13.5% of the adult population, ages 15 to 49, living with HIV. Approximately 200,000 cases of HIV infection have been diagnosed and reported in Namibia. The life expectancy is currently at 62 years. Namibia also has one of the highest proportions of orphans in the world with an estimated 66,000 children orphaned due to AIDS.. Read more |

An AMICAALL Action Plan has been developed via a consultative process that includes: national/local government authorities, UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS, Ministry of Regional and Local Government
Housing and Rural Development (MRLGHRD), Global Fund,UNDP, UN Habitat, VSO, UNAIDS, civil society organisations, bilateral agencies, and community leaders.

Association of Netherlands Municpalities and AIDS FONDS Foundation - providing support for a Multi-Purpose Center in the town of Otjiwarongo to respond to needs of vulnerable young people, orphans and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

Centers for Disease Control (CDC)/US Conference of Mayors, USA, - providing support for city-to-city cooperation between cities/towns in Namibia and in the USA.

City of Barcelona and City of Windhoek - developed a twinning programme, which will also include support to AMICAALL programme activities.

City of Windhoek - initiated municipal workplace programmes on HIV/AIDS.

City of Otjiwarongo - spearheaded local fundraiser for Multi-Purpose Center.

Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria - providing a grant for development of the national AMICAALL coordination structure, programme and local projects.

Organization for Educational Resources and Technological Training International Cooperation (ORT IC) - lead technical partner for a vocational training and youth development programme, Skills, Opportunities and Self-Reliance (SOS), for orphaned and vulnerable young people in three municipalities.

UNDP - provided a grant for producing an impact assessment and planning tool, Local Governance and HIV/AIDS: A Toolkit for Impact Assessment and Strategic Planning, developed in collaboration with the Alliance Secretariat, AMICAALL Namibia Programme, UN APP and other local partners.

USAID - provided the support for:
- Development of multi-purpose centers in three municipalities: Oshakati, Walvis Bay, and Windhoek.
- AMICAALL Programme activities.
- Development of an HIV/AIDS Service Referral Directory produced by the City of Windhoek.
- SOS Programme funding for three years through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
