RESOLUTION 4

Title: In support of the Alliance of Mayors' Initiative for Community Action on AIDS at the Local Level (AMICAALL)

WHEREAS, the Alliance of Mayors and Municipla Leaders on HIV/AIDS in Africa was created in January 1998 to promote and support partnerships among cities, with civil society and the private sector in order to expand community based responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic; and

WHEREAS, mayors and municipal leaders are seeing first hand the devastating impact of the epidemic within their communities and are a vital link between national policies and local action; and

WHEREAS, in 2001, the National Conference of Black Mayors, Inc (NCBM), by resolution, urged its members to be of assistance to the Alliance of Mayors and Municipal leaders on HIV/AIDS in Africa.

NOW, THEREFOR BE IT RESOLVED, that the National Conference of Black Mayors, Ind. (NCBM) strongly recommends that its members work together with the Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders to identify concrete actions that can be supported in the towns and cities who have made a commitment to addressing HIV/AIDS in their municipal agendas within the framework of AMICAALL.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that NCBM strongly encourages its members to set up a task force dedicated to identifying a specific number of actions that can be taken in the very near future to support the Alliance and its program of work, including the identification of resources, technical and financial.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that NCBM welcomes the opportunity to work with the UN-AMICAALL Partnership Programme, which was set up to support the work of the Alliance and facilitate the implementation of national AMICAALL programs, in further developing a program of action in support of goals of the Alliance.
