NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF BLACK MAYORS


The National Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM), a private, non-profit organisation that serves as a network of almost 500 mayors across the United States, held its 27th Annual Convention in Savannah, Georgia from March 7 to 11, 2001. One of the policy resolutions adopted at this convention was in support of the Alliance.


RESOLUTION 15

Title: In Support Of The Alliance Of Mayors And Municipal Leaders On HIV/AIDS In Africa

WHEREAS, the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa is jeopardizing its social and economic development, cutting deep into all sectors of African society, destroying Africa's valuable human resources and undermining development gains achieved over the last four decades; and

WHEREAS, mayors and municipal leaders are an important source of leadership in the struggle against HIV/AIDS and a fundamental complement to national efforts; and

WHEREAS, African mayors and other municipal leaders have taken the initiative to create an Alliance to promote and implement multi-sectoral actions on HIV/AIDS at the local level through consultative processes involving civil society organizations and community leaders in order to build sustainable capacity to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the National Conference of Black Mayors, Inc. (NCBM) expresses its strong support for the principles and goals of the Abidjan Declaration issued by the Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders on HIV/AIDS in Africa.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that NCBM commends the actions being taken by local leaders in Africa to mobilize partnerships among local authorities, to build networks of solidarity within communities, with other cities in Africa, and internationally.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that NCBM urges all of its members to be of assistance to the Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders on HIV/AIDS in Africa.
